Nikander ja Wiinikka Oy is a family business that was established more than 100 years ago. The founder of the company, Oskar Nikander, is the great-grandfather of the current executive director, Sami Nikander. The business was started in 1897 in Helsinki, when Oskar Nikander bought a leather store from his cousin in the very central Itä-Heikinkatu, which is today known as Mannerheimintie. Oskar’s brother Robert was made a partner in the company, now named Oskar Nikander ja Kumppani, “Oskar Nikander and Partner”.
The turnover grew steadily, and by the time Finland became independent in 1917, the company became a limited company with three other partners in addition to the three brothers.
In 1932, the old company was liquidated. A new company was established with some new partners, some of whom were long-term employees of the old company. At the same time, some old partners left the company. The company assumed the name Nikander ja Wiinikka Oy.
The company operated from three different addresses in Helsinki, until it moved to Tampere, closer to the major clients, in 1958. After the war, Tampere became the centre of the Finnish shoe industry. The shoe industry in Kankaanpää and Orivesi also began to grow.
The first office of Nikander ja Wiinikka Oy in Tampere was located in the Tammela area, in the vicinity of the Aaltosen Kenkätehdas shoe factory. In 1982, the company relocated to a larger premises in the Sarankulma industrial area. The subsidiary company Nikander ja Wiinikka Eesti AS has operated since 1996 in Tallinn, Estonia.
In the 2000s, Nikander ja Wiinikka strongly developed its service and product portfolio for the retailers of consumer products. In 2010, the visual look of the company was renewed, and the marketing name Nikander was adopted.
